Spiritist, occultist, författare och med-grundare till Theosophical Society 1875. Hon betraktades både som guru och charlatan. Hennes idéer var till vis del en förgångare trill New Age. Hon fick inte tillräckligt många röster vid invalet till USA:s Hall of Fame 1935.
