Efter att John Brown avrättats för att ha hjälpt slavar till frihet hittade en soldat på texten John Brown’s body till en gammal söndagsskolmelodi. Prästen James Freeman Clarke tyckte att församlingsmedlemmen Julia Ward Howe borde hitta på en mer passande text till melodin. I februarinumret av Atlantic Monthly publicerades Battle hymn of the republic anonymt. Howe fick $5. I övrigt var hon känd för sina skriverier, föreläsningar och kampen för slaveriet avskaffande. Hon blev den första kvinnan som valdes in i American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Before the battle of Midway a photographer of Ford’s unit took some 16 mm colour footage of the life on a PT Boat. When all but one in this squadron were killed during the battle, Ford edited the footage and reduced it to 8 mm. A copy was delivered by personal messenger to all the families. The film was never used in any other way.
